ACE VIDEO DIRECTOR AK ONE INTRODUCES 'ALEJO'

The history of video making in the new age Nigerian music industry will not be complete with the absence of the name AK ONE. The seasoned video director who has successfully carved a niche for himself with strings of top-notch videos and TV commercials has been absent from the scene for a long while. Well, the absence wasn’t cos he went idle, the young man was actually shooting an international TV series, working on a rebrand for his music video and himself personally, and putting together his label. Now that he has gotten it all together, it’s time to resume work. Hence, we introduce ALEJO.

ALEJO, born Celestine Adeeko, is the first artiste on AK ONE’s record label ONE DREAM PROJEKT. ALEJO is a songwriter, producer and instrumentalist who grew up listening to the likes of Ebenezer Obey and  Segun Adewale. He is a former band member of TOSYN BUCKNOR’s CON.TRA.DICTION and together with singer HAKYM he co-produced several hit songs for the likes of Kel, Iyanya, Jafextra, Slim T and Hakym himself.
AK ONE just released the video for ALEJO's first single  LET ME HOLD YOU. Different kind of song, exciting set for a video. His dream at ONE DREAM believe this is definitely something that’ll be fresh and distinct for a long long time.

"NOT YOUR MAN" - UCEE BLACK's MESSAGE IN A SONG"

"...Baby you and me, been dey so good as friends
Sisi, you and me… e don teey wey we be friends
We had a good thing, your friendship – it means so much to me
So how could we, do something like this
Everybody know say, friends and sex no dey meet
But E don happen, we don… “mmm”… and I’ve got to deal with this Oh no

Chorus: Girl am begging you, am begging you – kill this love you feel
Sisi am warning you, am warning you – don’t get too close to me
Cos am not the man you’re looking for (x3) No No…

This is what verse 2 of this interesting song says; I couldn't help but listen to it over and over again and imagine how "handy" the song will come in for the guys; you know... the type of men who are "not ready" for anything serious or futuristic (as the case maybe) that will come out of the relationship. Interestingly, it has a closing line that re-assures you he knows what he is saying...

“I no fit be… the man you looking for
But I can be your best friend; nothing more!”

This new single titled 'Not your man' is an upbeat tune produced by LeriQ, one of PortHarcourt's finests and it combines Ucee Black's unique vocals and engaging lyrics to deliver a classic naija Pop piece that makes one just want to dance, while the message is as clear as possible. This release represents a step closer to the drop of Ucee Black's debut album titled 'Work & Play' scheduled for release later this year.

Download this song I call the special dedication from guys to girls/ girls to guys who are looking to play away *wink wink -  http://www.4shared.com/audio/1WWYPwsF/Not_your_man.html

Twenty Eleven Channel O MVAs... and the Nigerian Factors *wink*

This year's Channel O Music Video Awards nominee list was announced on Thursday August 16, 2011 in Johannesbourg, as the music hub put up a launch party. COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT - ELDEE AND NCC BATTLE TECHNO

Tecno, a China-based phone manufacturing company and one of Nigeria’s top selling handset brand, is now in a copyright mess over the infringement of Nigerian musicians’ intellectual properties. Championing the cause of Nigerian artistes in this ugly development is one of the foremost musicians cum producer, Lanre Dabiri, popularly known as eLDee.

Tecno, it was alleged, has preloaded different songs, some by Nigerian artistes, onto memory cards embedded in their phones sold without due consultation or permission from the artistes to use the songs.
What, however, is making the matter shoddier is the fact that the company is not ready to compensate the acts whose rights were infringed upon. Sources state that eLDee and his consultants, Maxaro Consulting, having discovered that one of his songs, Bosi Gbangba, is currently enlisted among the songs pre-loaded on some Tecno phones, had approached the company to stop using the song and for a share of the royalty accruing from sale of the phones so far. However, instead of the company showing remorse by granting the artiste audience and trying to reach a consensus, it became adamant and arrogant, claiming that it was helping the artistes, including eLDee, to promote their songs and as a result, didn’t owe them a dime. In response then, elDee, through his lawyer, has instituted a suit in court. At one of the hearings, the presiding judge had ordered that eLDee and his lawyers should visit Tecno’s local agents and representatives and seize all the infringing phones they find and any documents related to them.

Implementation of the said order, we heard, disrupted activities at Tecno’s Customer Care office in Ikeja, Lagos. The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has also joined in the case and is investigating the matter. This is not the first multinational companies will violate the rights of Nigerian artistes, but this time around, the artistes are finally taking their own future into their hands.

Well, I hope elDee gets good from Techno; this is wrong on every level. China made things; carry go!!!

The most successful music artiste in Africa is a twin and they honestly do feel the reason for their success is first and foremost, the chemistry between them. Like the P Square brothers, Twins Affair - a duo made up of two brothers produce their own records which permits for them to interprete a record just as they want it when they write. Twins Affair is a work in progress and they are putting in all the work to stay consistent, relevant over a long period of time. The twin admire the duo of Peter and Paul Okoye for their consistency.

ARTISTE PROFILE - TAIYA SOUL

With a captivating smile, fresh faced, quick mouthed, energetic, thought provoking, Singer/ Songwriter Taiya Soul is the personification of SOUL. So who is TAIYA SOUL? A singer/songwriter that believes music is the food of life, everything in life has its own beat and pulse.

From the tender age of 3 Nigerian born Taiya Soul displayed a desire for music and performance, as a dancer. At the age of 7 her music teacher pointed out the fact Taiya Soul could sing and showed a natural ability for it, so she joined her primary school choir. It wasn’t until age 10 that Taiya Soul started song writing an ability she gained from both her parents as they unknowingly fuelled her passion for words. Her father would wake the house every Saturday to the sound of Singers such as Millie Jackson, Patti Labelle, Michael McDonald, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson to name a few; And her mother loved reading and would often do so around Taiya Soul and her brother.

At Secondary School Taiya Soul met A girl by the name of Chantel Allayne and went on to form the group ‘Panache’, a three piece harmony group but left a year later after realising it was not the way she wanted to go as she wanted a more prominent role in music. Soon after leaving Panache she met a rapper by the Name of Smooth Flo and together with Smooth Flo’s girlfriend they formed another group and went on to secure a management deal but the deal soon fell apart and the group broke up. Through Smooth Flo, Taiya Soul met another Rapper named Skills (later to be known as JJC Skills, Artist, Producer, Video Director and CEO of Big Boys) who was part of a Hip Hop group, unknown to Taiya Soul that this meeting was going to shape a vital part of her life.

The time spent with Skills and his group saw her performing with them as the female lead, as well as working with other artists such as English/ French group ‘Fighting Chance’ and producers Mark and Jim. In 2004 she met a Producer / Sound Engineer by the name Ena who introduced her to Osiki ‘Ozzy’ Ojo. This period gave Taiya Souls song writing a distinct voice and it is an experience that has brought her to present day launch into the music industry as a solo artist. 2009 She featured on the single ‘Swagger on Lock’ with K16 from his Album ‘Wetin Dey/Eye Service’.

In August 2010 Taiya Soul performed with Africa’s number one artist 2Face in both London and Manchester, UK. September 2010 Taiya featured on ‘No Love’ with Modenine part of his ‘Pay AT-10- SHUN album. She also performed in front of 25,000 for the 50th anniversary of the Nigerian independence event title Nigerian @50 in Trafalgar Square in London, UK on the 10th October 2010. Taiya Soul is currently working on her EP/ Mixtape ‘Under Construction’ with various UK and Nigerian Producers based in the UK all in partnership with chief producer Mannay for Kitchen Studios. Her debut single is titled ‘Run’ was released January 2011, and is still currently being well recieved.

Hemba's Diary... of music and other vibes*

I learnt a lesson of love and forgiveness this week - two actually. For one, I ran into some 'self-made' enemy of mine, and seeing that I am not exactly a malice expert, we said hi to each other. Conversation however, was as awkward as you can imagine; as for the other matter, I will bring myself to tell y'all that story sometime soon. Moving on, I had to do a lot of proposal writing for my clients this week, prepare for meetings - most of which were cancelled (arrrrrrgh) and generally spend my time cracking up on how best to possibly reach out to target audience for some select clients whose PR campaigns my team and I are trying to break. Of course music went along with all these activities - I wonder if I would have survived without it.
Uvie and I at Mnet's welcome party for Karen at Chrome Lounge on Friday August 5, 2011.

I am in a very good mood to share stuff, random music and videos... especially this one which I received from MTVBase in March on D'Banj speaking about his "Mr Endowed rmx" video with Snoop Dogg... I am sharing because I love you all for just clicking (yes, even you whom I know nothing of/ about); and mostly because I feel a little guilty, having spent almost half of my work time doing a lot of internet searches for classic songs; I really couldnt help that you know???... interesting music from the early 90s - that type beautiful-classic-soul music. So, here's a peek into the playlist I am currently building... let me know if you feel the music like I do; enjoy!!!

EXCLUSIVE: LYDIA IDAKULA SOBOGUN - Celebrating A Whooping One Hundred Editions of TARUWA...

TARUWA has become a household name in Lagos for spoken word artistes, musicians, poets, lyricists and the overall Art Lover looking to unwind amidst creativity. Started by Gbagyichild Entertainment CEO Lydia Idakula Sobogun, TARUWA has been called home to the stars - MI, Omawumi, Snatcha of Rooftop MCs, Tosyn Bucknor, Sistasoul, Cobhams and Home groomed Alternative artiste Bez Idakula; amongst others. The magazine program which started out as a forthnite event evolved into a quarterly published magazine with a theme to put art onto paper for the many TARUWA lovers. In this exclusive interview, Messus Sobogun talks about her passion, the dream, the challenges, prospects and the grand 100th edition coming up on August 30, Twenty Eleven.
Miss Hemba: TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF
LYD: Kai! I don't like talking about myself jo! You have to ask me specific questions! I grew up in Jos, Corona primary School Jos, Baptist High School Jos, UJ, Lagos Law school! Wetin again? We're four, Eunice, Lydia, Bez, Anyidakula. My very proud mom lives in Keffi, my dad died in Nov of 97.
I'm married to a wonderful and amazing man with an overactive 2 year old daughter! Loool! I Love God, I love my family, and I love the arts.

Miss Hemba: TARUWA IS CELEBRATING ITS 100’TH EDITION, HOW DO YOU FEEL AS THE INITIATOR?
LYD: I'm feeling really overwhelmed right now, coz the journey has not been an easy one. Though it's been very fulfilling; On our first Taruwa, we were seven people. Today... Well today. Hmmn!

Miss Hemba: WHAT WAS YOUR PRIMARY AIM OF STARTING TARUWA?
LYD: We just wanted people to have a forum where they could enjoy arts, stripped down, no pretense, just real; with a crowd of art lovers. I needed Taruwa too, more than anything. It became like therapy for me. Lol! I lived for Taruwa Tuesdays!

Miss Hemba: DO YOU THINK YOU FILLED A CERTAIN VOID WITH TARUWA AS AN EVENT?
LYD: Well I think it still fills a void. Taruwa is one of the only events where you can just come up and express yourself. When we started, you could just walk up to the organiser or host and put your name on the list to perform no matter who you are but because the list gets very full very quickly now, people need to get their names on the list earlier than the Taruwa day. There are some of those kind of events now. Some inspired by Taruwa, some not. But I'm glad for them, because there are soooo many talented people out there and not enough stages for them.

Miss Hemba: WOULD YOU SAY IT HAS BEEN SUCCESSFUL?
LYD: I would say that Taruwa has been a huge success, and success for me is not in the numbers, but in the lives which are continually affected by Taruwa's existence, and the number of people who you know now, because you once heard them at Taruwa. I hear people saying they want to break out and someone adviced them to "go perform at Taruwa" that makes me feel good. That we can contribute to someone's success is awesome.

Miss Hemba: WHAT WOULD YOU ATTRIBUTE TO ITS SUCCESS – WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE KEY SUCCESS FACTOR
LYD: It's been successful First I think because it wasn't started with financial gain in mind. It's been free for the past four years. We had one paid one, Christmas of 2007 to raise funds but it's been free really. Another reason I think it's successful, is because we are genuinely passionate about the arts, and passionate for artistes who are starting up. So we give you the promotion you'd ordinarily pay through your nose for... I think also because we don't do "stars" at Taruwa. Anybody who comes, celebrity or not, drops whatever cloak at the door and becomes a true art lover and a friend. Taruwa is a place for genuine people and art lovers. No pretences, no chips, and no horses- high or otherwise! Everyone who performs, wether you've performed on a stage before or not, will be applauded if you're good, and helped off the stage (nicely) Looool! If you're bad! Taruwa has become a family, you have Taruwa lovers who will NEVER miss Taruwa, and who will never say no when called upon to host or perform or something. That makes me feel truly awesome and very special.

Miss Hemba: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE BUILD TO THIS 100’TH EVENT, THE PEOPLE, THE PLACES, THE EVENT ITSELF?
LYD: It will be business as usual o! Every Taruwa is a special one so you won't be hearing huge names just to get people to come. We will have some special artistes and friends (and brothers- wink) in the house of course, but Taruwa lovers are honestly not motivated by big names. They just love arts so they come out. We will however be selling tickets for Two Thousand Naira only (2k) just to raise funds to sustain, and to be able to invest in other projects. We have decided that we will have a paid event for every anniversary from now on, to raise funds.

Snatcha (RoofTopMCs) a taruwa lover and regular will be hosting, and my brother “BEZ” will be performing... Duhhh!!

Miss Hemba: WOULD YOU SAY TARUWA HAS CONTRIBUTED TO THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY?
LYD: Of course!! Definitely!! (Ka ji mun tambaya!?)*** Coz I can count a lot of big names who Taruwa has been a part of their process... And because we've helped hone skills. Stage skills, performance skills...

Miss Hemba: WAS THERE A POINT IN THE COURSE OF TIME THAT YOU FELT THE NEED TO GIVE UP?
LYD: Lemme put it this way. There were mornings when I didn't want to get out of bed. But it has never once crossed my mind to quit!

Miss Hemba: WHY DID YOU PRESS ON?
LYD: There's no other option, I've burnt my bridges. I'm doing what I love. What God has called me to do! It has to work! *Burst into song here* aaaand iiii aaaam telling you, I'm not going... And you, you, you- you're gonna loooove meeeeeee!

Miss Hemba: WHAT MAKES YOU PROUDEST WHEN YOU THINK OF “TARUWA”
LYD: The friends I've made, the family I've gained, and the people whose lives have been touched positively by Taruwa. Bez makes me really really really proud too! I'm almost in tears whenever I watch him perform!

Miss Hemba: LET’S GET A BIT PERSONAL; ARE YOU SINGLE? AND IF THERE’S A MAN, TELL US IF YOU MET HIM VIA TARUWA *wink wink*
LYD: Lol! Amebo olofofo! I'm married, and I have Jos (waaaay before Taruwa) to thank for that!

Miss Hemba: HOW HAVE YOU JOGGLED TARUWA WITH FAMILY?
LYD: I have a verrrry supportive family! I wouldn't be able to do it if I didn't. My husband's an amazing support system (all by himself) and my mom has taken care of my two year old whenever I've had to be in Lagos. I owe whatever success to the Love, help and understanding of my entire family.

Miss Hemba: WHAT IS THE GREATEST LESSON YOU CAN PASS ON, RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
LYD: Seek first the kingdom of God and ALL other things shall be added unto you!
Passion, Passion Passion!!
Believe in yourself and what you carry (what God has placed in you)
Keep your overheads as low as possible!

Miss Hemba: ANY PROSPECTS FOR THE FUTURE; DOES IT STOP WITH TARUWA?
LYD: Soooo much to do!! We've been recording and compiling Taruwa to make into an unplugged TV program. That's one of the things we've had in mind for a while now. We've been in talks with several TV houses. We'll be going on air soon by God's grace! Taruwa's parent company Gbagyichild Entertainment is also looking into other projects. We've just concluded a photography exhibition in Abuja which was very successful, and we're also working on the next issue of the Taruwa Magazine which is due out in October.

The mind is always working, thinking and churning, so rest assured that there will be stuff going on for a long time to come!

Miss Hemba: #CONGRATS AND HAPPY ANNIVERSARY
LYD: Thanks Sweets!

Canada based Nigerian R&B singer Prince Hakeem, born Tajudeen Afolabi Baiyewu Cole, is a blend of finely crafted music having followed closely the art of established music icons like Donell Jones and Usher. He crafts his writing skills and music to speak to the heart. Growing up, he wanted to be an accountant like his father but his passion for music has led him to work with producers like Boi1da, Cool and Dre, the Beat Freaks, Tyler Williams, the man who produced “How low can you go” for Ludacris and many more.

As a writer, he has co-written songs for artistes like Eve and with over a million myspace plays, he has decided to bring his talents back home while he still interacts with international producers and artistes. Prince Hakeem believes that he can make beautiful music that is international and still portray the African soul. He is working non-stop in the studio to give his fans good music.
His soon-to-be released mixtape titled “Beautiful Songs About Beautiful Girls” is one which music enthusiasts should look out for. “Can’t breathe” and “Dont take your Love” are the first two official singles to be released off the mixtape

“Beautiful Music About Beautiful Girls” is about life with the ladies... the love, the fights, the good times and the annoying times. But at the end of the day, we all know what matters to us... be it the beauty within or the beauty everyone sees... African women are beautiful and this mixtape is dedicated to you all! - Prince Hakeem

“I cant breathe” focuses on the feeling of losing the people we love and that hurt that makes us do and say things to get them back. Produced by Tyler Williams, the instrumental still remains the property of the producer... listen to the tracks
